Relevant Animation History

When looking at relevant animations that were similar to my own, I searched for each of the problems that can affect an artist and their mental health. There were 3 animations about Burnout, AI, and Social Media that were very inspirational. Plus, each got across their chosen subject expertly and I wish to showcase them here.

The first animation, that being a video called ‘Burnout’ by Tori Draws Stuff, is a very unique and peaceful animation. The medium they chose to animate was through little drawings on post it notes, being put on top of each other, much like stop motion. This gives it a special identity which lasts with the viewer, and, personally, was very beautiful. Throughout the animation there is no voiceover, with the only audio being a song on guitar. However, the animation does have some text during the animation to read. Unlike the other two animations that have much to say, the only points this animation has to say is “Burnout sucks.” and “Life is sometimes peaceful.” Two very simple phrases that do their job in bringing comfort to the viewer.

This animation probably inspired me the most, with how it is an animation with visuals doing a lot of the talking. However, instead of mine which shows how it can feel to be on the internet, their animation was made to comfort people going through burnout.

The other two animations take very different routes compared to the first animation, yet I feel they discuss some of the issues I have in the modern era very eloquently. Despite their execution of said ideas being very different from the first animation and my own ideas, the impact they have are big enough that they should be included.

The second animation, called ‘How You Will Lose Your Job To AI’, presents the history of the creation of ai and how it has impacted humanity. Halfway through the animation however, it shifts into a hypothetical future, telling a tale of how the advancement of ai could lead us into an unfulfilling future, where humanity is deprived of what it means to truly be human. It presents the idea that the overuse of ai will lead us to become lazy, along with how endless entertainment “dulled their minds.” Overall, it is an interesting interpretation on the path we are taking as a species. I personally found the way it crafted its world with visuals to be very interesting, especially the settings. Despite being simplistic in how they’re drawn, they get across their ideas without the composition being compromised.

Lastly, the animation, ‘What Happened to Social Media Being Fun for Artists?’, acts as an advertisement for a web page the creator, Helena Risc, is attempting to create. Despite that, the video is presented as a viewpoint on the past of the internet, and how the arrival of corporations changed the light-hearted nature of sharing drawings into a overly corporate and business oriented environment. The message of being stuck to Instagram inspired me to base my characters social media on the site itself, as I believed it was a good example.
